What is Vibe Coding?

Vibe coding is an AI-dependent programming technique coined by Andrej Karpathy (former AI leader at Tesla and co-founder of OpenAI) in February 2025. Rather than writing code manually, vibe coding involves describing a problem in natural language to an AI large language model (LLM), which then generates the actual code. The programmer's role shifts from hands-on coding to guiding, testing, and refining AI-generated solutions.

What distinguishes true vibe coding is accepting code without fully understanding every line—as AI researcher Simon Willison notes:

"If an LLM wrote every line of your code, but you've reviewed, tested, and understood it all, that's not vibe coding... that's using an LLM as a typing assistant."

This approach allows even amateur programmers to create functional software without extensive technical training.
